"This I Believe" --- What are Your Beliefs?

Well, as we come into the middle of term 3, the year is going to end soon and based on my MSG for the last 2 terms, I could be going the wrong way but there has been a new lease of life this term. For the several tests in Chinese and one test in Mathematics, I have gotten A1s and I do hope that run will continue. But I do ask myself: why was there this new change of results this term? Was it that I listened to the teachers’ “famous quotes” from Term 2 and this term? Many teachers have been telling me “Work Smart”, but I really do not know the true meaning of it but this task has allowed me to research on it:

http://www.dumblittleman.com/2010/06/working-hard-is-not-enough-heres-18.html

Let me concentrate on points that have more significance:

1.) Create a vision.
From the multiple platforms such as ePortfolio, it is now clearer to me what my vision/mission/aim or motto is, “Work Hard but Work Smart”. One day, I do hope that I will acquire the skills to work smart, thus, change now (words for myself).

2.) Learn from Others
I do have my own ways of revising when tests come but I do not achieve success at all times, it is time for me to look at the methods others use – creating your own notes? No, I am not a spatial learner and I do not want to waste time on creating the notes. Instead, I go through worksheets, find my mistakes and revise or even take the teacher’s handouts to read. But sometimes, those that always create their own notes always seem to get A1s… (sigh)

3.) If it works, stick to it
Sometimes, my method of revision does work but it is time for me to change but not at this stage, especially since my tests are in these 2 weeks (T3W7 & T3W8). Try that method another time, like a pre-test for examinations.

4.) Ask for help
I am one of those that prefer to do things myself and not disturb ourselves (it’s great work ethnic according to the website). But, sometimes, one doesn’t know that he may be going the wrong way. I haven’t been proactive in asking for help, so yet again, do change for the sake of myself (to stay in IP and hold on to the leadership positions)

5.) Stop when you are tired
At times, being hardworking all day may not reap your results and I do get tired at times. I do badly need rest sometimes. But at times, when I just want to finish the homework that needs to be handed up tomorrow, I do start to drink coffee and continue working.

Nevertheless, this blog post could be crucial to me in my future life because it has stated my belief. I do sincerely hope that this blog post could well bring change to me for the next term and excel in the EOYs. Maybe I have gone a little off-task here, with the blog post seeming like a dairy entry and being informal. Sorry about that.

Still – Good Luck for me and ALL and I do take pleasure in writing this meaningful blog post. I do hope to see the essays of my classmates and their beliefs and see what I can learn from there (Point 2.)

Thank You because now, I know the meaning and what to do next. Let this serve as inspiration to me.

24.) Term 3 LA Blog Review

Kudos! It has been yet another term of blogging for Language done it for two years, indefinitely everyone’s blogging skills have improved. Blogging this term has been a source for me to vent my frustration on, because it just soothes one’s mind since it is quick, fast and easy. If not for LA ACE, I really do wonder how many of us will bother to update our blog but today (18th July 2011) could well be my last ever blog post for this year (since I want to get my ACE done quickly such as to concentrate on academics for the rest of the term). Indeed, I have enjoyed this blogging experience of mine and in the hope of next year; I hope it will happen again.

Shakespeare’s Language & Our Language

Blog Prompt: Now that you understand how the English Language evolved, share with us some words into which you have gained new insights (about their origin, their form, etc.)In what ways is Elizabethan English different from the English we use today? Discuss some new terms and grammars that exist in the various Englishes in the world today.

English today is such an important language to all people worldwide and it is not only about new words. While English in the past was vastly different from what we have today, I personally feel that the words today sound much nicer than before. Would you rather say the word “hath” than “have”? It sounds weird to us because we are accustomed to the language today. However, the last two websites/articles have brought out the importance of the English Language today. Today, English is seen as the official and worldwide language to be used everywhere. However, the different English has also resulted in some negatives, such as the construction of profanities or phrases. Nevertheless, Shakespeare’s Language most likely played a crucial role in deciding the language we have today, according to research done, 3000 words from Shakespeare’s language influenced words or were added into the dictionary we have today. Wherever we go, we would hear English. In our normal lives in our school, aren’t the majority of the lessons in English? Even when we converse with our classmates, how many of us converse in different languages such as Chinese? English has been an important tool to all, being recognised as the official language, everyone will need to “at least” have some knowledge of it. Examples include businesses within two different countries, where they use English to converse, besides, what happens when there is an emergency signal? Are you going to give it in all 4 languages (based on Singapore) or only spread the message in English? In one of the articles, a student’s Greek friend who heard of the London Bombings immediately called the student to alight the bus and a minute later, the bus was truly a target of bomb explosions, which had saved his life. The language they used to converse despite having 2 different nationalities: English. Look ahead in the future: Would there be any changes to the English language? What would happen in the future? Would there be new words added to the dictionary?

Term 3 Comment 10

This comment is based on Yi Da’s blog post entitled “People over Penny (Dr Susan Lim Case).”

Indeed, many people will share the same opinions with you since it is a huge amount of money and doctors should be benevolent, and charge their patients accordingly, regardless of social standing or any other categories. However, there is no evidence to back up the fact that she had overcharged her patient, maybe indeed the cost of the treatment was this high. Besides, doctors do have a heart, but we always need to make known of our intentions. These days, it is a very materialistic world, where money is important to all of us; don’t you hear your parents wanting you to study hard, such that in the future, you will hold high-paid jobs such as lawyers and doctors? So, think: Is it benevolence or money you want when you’re a doctor?

Term 3 Comment 9

This comment is based on Tian-Le’s blog post entitled “Adolescent Delinquency.”

A meaningful and well-chosen topic for your blog post since some of us could be stuck in this situation currently now. To start, you have given your audience a great in-depth report, which is inclusive of research done on the Internet as well as voicing your own opinions with regards to this highly debatable issue. It is also a very informal way to approach the audience, which could trigger response from the public, especially parents and parents-to-be, whom may want to change their views with regards to this by changing their lifestyle to spend more valuable time with their children. On a brighter side, let’s wish and hope that none of us will ever be caught in this situation and for those that have been caught in it, it is time for you to take action because you are the only one that can help yourself and bring about change for the better.

Term 3 Comment 8

This comment is based on Wei Yang’s blog post entitled “The Upcoming Project’s Day Semi-Finals.”.

I personally feel that this topic could be inappropriate for a blog post that will be read by students and teachers from Hwa Chong. For everything you write in your blog, you should have a purpose and based on the content, your purpose is to let the audience know more about Hwa Chong’s Projects Day Competition, but the audience are people that are aware of it already and at the end of the day, you have failed in your motive to telling others more. Although I believe that this blog post could serve as valuable knowledge to others (students/teachers not from Hwa Chong), you should have added on by giving your opinions on why is there such an event organised or what are the purposes/aims/objectives of holding this competition.

Term 3 Comment 7

This comment is based on Jonathan’s blog post entitled “Book Review- Jeffrey Archer’s Not a Penny More, Not a Penny Less.”.

I am not trying to be critical here but personally, I feel that a book review is not supposed to be done in this way. A book review is different from a book summary. A book review is supposed to contain an in-depth review of the book such as the themes of the story. Besides, it should contain basic information such as details of publisher, most importantly, concentrate on the themes and try to relate it to real-life examples, at the same time, giving your comments, experiences and feelings after having read the book. However, your book summary has been excellent, covering the important characters in the story as well as giving the audience quick, brief but yet crucial details in the plot.

Term 3 Comment 6

This comment is based on Clarence’s blog post entitled “Russian Ship Capsize”.

Good job in telling all about the current affairs in today’s world. I do definitely agree with you that money should not be saved at the expense of the lives of the people. From this and based on your character, you are one that likes to create or construct new stuff, especially since you are in CCA Robotics. However, maybe you could have added more information about how ships are built such that we could have gained in-depth knowledge about why the ship capsized, which will mean looking at the heavier side of events, in this case being the scientific part. Besides, maybe you could share your experience on a ship if you have sat one before in order to enhance a real visual imagery for your readers.

Term 3 Comment 5

This comment is based on Wei Ren’s blog post entitled “Holiday Reading (Book Review-Fortune’s Folly)”.

It’s great having students from our class to introduce good books to us but I would have felt that this book would not interest many people in our class since it is fantasy-based and I believe that minority of the people go for fantasy-based stories, instead we love adventure and science-fiction based stories. Besides, based on my experiences of reading a fantasy based book, it has no relation to our curriculum and the main purpose is for entertainment, which is something we are not looking for. Maybe you could have pointed out the themes of the story, which is not the genre of the story (fantasy) and share what you have learnt from this story such as writing techniques or morals even though it hardly appears in fantasy based books.

Term 3 Comment 4

This comment is based on Ming Fwu’s blog post entitled “The Gentleman”.

To start, I have no idea on why you say gentlemen are the elite class of the society. It seems weird because elite class of the society, being defined as by many people, are people that have succeeded in their careers and are bringing in huge bucks. The elite class of the society are respected by many since they can be seen as the highest tier in the social class table. Besides, it is questionable why you say that the priority of a gentleman is to be respected by the society? It makes it seem that one will only be a gentleman such as to be respected, why do some people be a gentleman, without any motives? Being a gentleman is up to one to decide whether he wants to or not because it is governed by virtues and how he wants to face and contribute to the society.

Term 3 Comment 3

This comment is based on Liak Ghee’s blog post entitled “Being a Gentleman”.

Maybe to add on to these points could be regarding my previous blog post (Term 3 Comment 2) about his actions. First, peer pressure, how would a gentleman tackle the problem of negative peer pressure? A gentleman should know what he is doing and definitely take the actions of N.A.H, preventing himself from succumbing to it. What about positive peer pressure such as the example described? It is up to him to decide really because a gentleman does not need to do well academically in order to be classified as a gentleman. Besides, should he want to pursue his interest, there is nothing wrong about it. However, he should always know his priority and take action accordingly. How would a gentleman then face parental pressure? This is a difficult issue to tackle, he needs to know that he should not disrespect his parents (such as when discussing with them), however, at the same time, protecting his interests and following their wishes.

Term 3 Comment 2

This comment is based on Liak Ghee’s blog post entitled “Peer Pressure”.

To start, all the points you have mentioned are valid and these actions should be taken by all in order to prevent one from succumbing to peer pressure. However, are you sure that there is no peer pressure that cannot ever be overcome? To start, peer pressure may not always be negative, it could be positive as well. One example would be you are required to attend a sabbatical for one year, while your friends choose a course that is related to academics, allowing one to improve themselves academically, you have chosen a course that has no relation to academics at all and you are in the situation where your academics have been poor. Thus, which one will you choose? Maybe another question to ask would be: Will N.A.H work when you face parental pressure?

Term 3 Comment 1

This comment is based on Wei Kiat’s blog post entitled “A True Gentleman”.

I have to agree with you that the definition of a gentleman from the dictionary is definitely wrong. However, I disagree with one point that you raised, you said that if a man was filthy but had a generous heart and possesses other qualities such as appropriate behaviour but look a filthy person indicates that he has no respect for himself, being sloppy about his appearance and does not mind how other people (the public) look at him. Thus, based on this scenario, he should not be classified as a gentleman

Being a Gentleman

What does it takes for one to be a gentleman? As a councillor, we are aware that we should be one of the best in this school and definitely uphold the qualities of a gentleman. As a councillor, I have attended one such course before which pertains to the quality of a gentleman. That was with regards to the table manners, where we were given the opportunity to prove ourselves by showcasing the proper and right way to eat. We were asked to eat in a restaurant and we had been asked to dress like a gentleman, long-sleeved shirt with a pair of long black pants and tie. Before we began our meal, we had been given a course on how we should eat like a gentleman, telling us the different utensils on the table and which ones are meant to be used for the part of the meal, such as there was one for the appetiser, main course, dessert. We also learnt how to eat and how to hold the utensils (forks, spoons and glass cup) in a proper way.

To be a proper gentleman, one must possess the basic qualities which govern the moral values of one and abide by them. To be a gentleman is no easy task. Besides, it is crucial to keep up one’s appearance as well, you wouldn’t want yourself being unshaved and hair uncut, while your clothes are not ironed, living others with a bad impression on you. Most importantly, we need to know the right thing to do at the right time. Not only does this bring out your qualities as a gentleman, but it serves as respect to others as well.

Can the Real William Shakespeare Please Stand Up?

a.) Why is William Shakespeare of Stratford-upon-Avon an unlikely candidate for the authorship of Shakespeare’s works?
Firstly, William Shakespeare had poor education. Besides, his family and him were classified as those in the lowest-income group, meaning that they had the lowest social status in the country. While these plays were usually seen everywhere, meaning that some plays had included other countries’ beliefs and cultures inside, it is unlikely for William Shakespeare, one whom has such low social status to be able to go to other countries to experience it before coming up with plays. Besides, he was uneducated. For a person to write out such plays of such high caliber definitely needs to be highly educated and adventurous to go to other places for inspiration and research.

b.) Who are the possible candidates?
There are a total of 5 candidates: Francis Bacon, Roger Manners (Earl of Rutland), Christopher Malowe, Edwerd de Vere (Earl of Oxford), William Stanley (Earl of Derby).

c.) Who is the most likely candidate for the authorship of Shakespeare’s works? Provide reasons to support your view.
We will do a brief background check of all 5 candidates before deciding on who is the most likely candidate for the authorship of Shakespeare’s works.
Firstly, we have Francis Bacon; many people actually believed that it was him that was the best and most likely candidate. However, as time goes by, we are able to analyze plays at a different level, by knowing their themes. Look at Shakespeare’s plays, they are so brilliant, which highlights the vivid imagination he had and even sometime highlights the emotions of one while Francis Bacon has almost the opposite characteristics; he tends to take things very seriously.
Next, we have Roger Manners. While Shakespeare’s plays were already in theatre, he was still a teen, unless he was a really awesome child prodigy but it seems really unlikely.
Third, we have Christopher Malowe. This candidate is pretty similar to Francis Bacon. Shakespeare’s plays as mentioned were emotional; however, his plays revolved around hard feelings but yet again there are many similarities between them. Besides, he has gotten into trouble with the law and I believe a refined man like Shakespeare will not carry out a misdeed.
Next, we have Edwerd de Vere. Although there are many similarities between their plays, he had died too soon, after he died, Shakespeare’s plays still continued on.
Lastly, we have William Stanley, who actually lived too long.
I personally feel that there could have been at least two people doing the plays of Shakespeare, and one of them could have been Francis Bacon while the other should be William Stanley. Indeed, Francis Bacon personalities differ but we cannot rule out that he treats different groups of audience differently and would change his attitudes and William Stanley could have continued his works after Francis Bacon passed on.

Shakespeare's Theatre

a.) In what sort of building were Shakespeare’s plays performed?
Shakespeare’s plays were played in Shakespeare’s theatre; the theatre was located in London, England, opened in 1599. Then, it had a small capacity, only allowing 3000 people to be inside, both standing and seated. Shakespeare’s Theatre was also called the Globe Theatre, its actual dimensions are not known, however, research has found it out to be an open-air and three-storey high amphitheatre.

b.) How did the physical constraints of the theatre affect the language of Shakespeare’s plays?
The stage could have been too small for Shakespeare’s plays to take place, judging by numerical figures, the stage was only 13.1 m in width, which may not have enough space for plays that required many people to be on stage. Besides, weather also played a huge role since it was open-air and with technology being not modern then, they were forced to attract the attention of the huge crowd (3000 people) with their voices.

c.) What sort of people acted in plays? What sort of people went to see them?
During that time, only men were allowed to act in plays. This seemed to be a law in the country because many deemed women as unsuitable to be acting in plays; this could be due to their qualities, being demure, and unable to grasp the attention of the audience. Only the rich and probably middle-income went to see these plays, as previous research has been done, we are aware that Queen Elizabeth I loved Shakespeare’s plays and invited him to conduct his plays or go to the theatre to see his plays. Peasants (Lower-Income) would not go since they were uneducated and would not be able to understand the play.

d.) How was ‘the theatre’ viewed by society?
The theatre was met with different reactions based on the different viewpoints we look from it. The royals did not have any complain about this, however, they could have disapproval of it. However, they had to follow the Queen, by respecting her; the Queen was an avid person of Shakespeare’s plays. Those that loved Shakespeare’s plays were definitely in support of it, wanting to share it with the public; however, the rich could have shown disapproval that plays of such high caliber should only be shown to those having a prominent social status.

e.) Compare the modern day Globe Theatre in London with the theatres that Shakespeare worked in.
There are not many differences with the modern day Globe Theatre and the old one Shakespeare worked in. Firstly, the location of the theatre, the current new theatre is actually located 230 m away from the original site of the old theatre. The theatre has similar outlines of the previous theatre but since it is a modern age today, the theatre built today is much stronger, unlike the old one which was demolished during a fire.

The Historical & Cultural Setting of Venice

a.) What was Venice like during the 15th and 16th century? Comment especially on its demographics and culture.
Venice was already part of England, and thus, its demographics and culture were pretty similar to majority of England. Firstly, the settlements were not modern due to the century we are currently discussing. They usually lived in villages and their villages were located in the proximity of the rivers, since they needed the water to survive. Their culture was pretty similar to England as well; there was a huge gap between the rich and the poor. The rich were mostly the royals, while the poor were mostly the peasants, whom worked as farmers. There was hardly a particular culture, except the fact that the people of Venice would usually rely on the royals (kingdom) from the queens and kings for instructions to relay and carry out.

b.) Why was Venice important during the 15th and 16th century?
Venice was important since it was seen as a key trading hub, Venice was also the easiest town for merchants to come since it was located near the sea, thus, merchants from Venice itself could set out sail themselves in search for new businesses and locations, while other merchants from other countries were allowed to come here to trade their valuable stuff, thus making it a crucial port, which contributed to the country’s economy.

c.) What was the dominant religion in Venice? How were Jews treated and regarded?
The dominant religion in Venice was most probably Christians. Jews were treated in a different way, being marginalized from the society, where most people would be together. According to past research done and knowledge of Merchant of Venice, Jews were the main subject of hatred of the Christians. From the book, we could raise an example of how Jews were treated differently, that they needed to pay interest when getting a loan, however, Christians did not need to do so, having loans with free-interest.

d.) How is Venice a choice setting for this plot and play?
Based on the research above, one of the key important points why Venice was chosen for this plot and play had to be because of its importance during that time. Then, Venice was an important place where trading took place and ships set off in search of businesses and since Antonio, the key character, was a merchant, it fitted it in. Besides, the story revolves around Antonio, where his businesses at sea play a crucial role in the plot. Another reason could be that many of Shakespeare’s plays were seen in Venice; however, we have no evidence to back it.

Truth of Mississippi Burning

1.) For minor crimes, most states have a “statute of limitations” that prohibits bringing charges when a certain period of time has elapsed since the crime. When it comes to serious crimes, is it right for the justice system to pursue criminal charges several decades after the crime is said to have occurred?
I believe it is right for the justice system to pursue criminal charges several decades after the crime is said to have occurred. As many people say, Justice have long arms, meaning that no matter how far away the victim is, no matter how long the case is under investigation, there is still a need for justice to be upheld and the culprits should be rightfully punished. Even though time has passed, it remains a fact that the culprit had committed a crime and has not been punished for his misdeeds. However, there is another scenario or problem to consider, such as the change of the law over the years or decades. Due to the passing of years and decades, law has definitely changed from before and currently, for murder, it could be lifetime imprisonment unlike in the past, it could have been sentence to death (Example). Thus, the law currently should be used to convict him.

2.) What do you think: was the state’s image “rehabilitated”?
I think that it represents a good image of the state, since people that have committed crimes decades before in the past are punished. Having been “rehabilitated”, it means that the accused wrongly have been given a new lease of life, been cleared of guilt and can continue to live like a normal person, while those that were truly accused, will receive punishment for their crimes and justice will be upheld.

3.) How much do you know about the civil rights era in general?
Currently, we are aware that the civil rights movement was on during that time, one such example was about the Montgomery Bus event, where it sparked racial riots in a bid to stand up for human rights. However, in general, the civil rights era concentrated on the human rights of people, such as justice and wants them to be people of fairness. Till now, some still believe that the Human Civil Rights Movement is still on because fairness has not been achieved yet for everyone.

Customs & Lifestyle

a.) Personal Hygiene
There are not many pieces of evidence to suggest examples of personal hygiene. However, we are able to guess the situation of personal hygiene based on our general knowledge and after reading Merchant of Venice. There is unlikely to have a high level of personal hygiene, considering that most countries were not modern at that time and like countries in Asia, it could have been dirty then due to the fact that we do not have enough knowledge about how the kingdom runs the country. Yet again, there are no pieces of evidence to suggest that it was dirty; it could have been quite clean. During that time, there were many diseases and people were learning how to cope against them, thus, they could have maintained a high level of personal hygiene.

b.) Diet
During that time, many people were peasants and since there was not much trade, many people depended on themselves for food. As peasants, most of them were farmers are depended on bread for their food; they grew rye and barley as ingredients to make bread. Besides bread, their only other sources of food come from pottage (a soup made from oats), meat (pigs), mutton (sheep and lamb) and other animals living in the woods near the village. They usually drank water taken from the river and milk; however, a more common drink would be ale, made from barley.

c.) Recreation
Once more, there is insufficient evidence to tell us what they did for recreation. One would have thought that Christmas could be a day of recreation for them. However, it isn’t, it causes grieve instead. Based on our knowledge, recreation could have been derived easily, by living in happiness, some hobbies could include hunting in the woods, or going out to sea.

d.) Accommodation
The peasants usually lived in towns, however, these towns were located at places where people could meet up easily, such as near rivers. These towns were very small compared to the towns we have now in England, such as Brimingham and London. Houses were usually built using wood, since buildings were very expensive and only the rich could afford mansions.

e.) Dress
The dress code could have been really simple in England; however, we do not have any evidence to support this claim. Based on our general knowledge, it is likely that they were dressed casually, just normal shirts and shorts made out of cloth. The rich definitely had better clothing, probably made out of silk and fibre and maybe with the use of ornaments made out of gold on it.

Religion: Jews vs. Christians

a.) What was the dominant religion in England and Venice in the 15th and 16th century?
According to resources, the dominant religion in England and Venice was most likely to be Christianity in the 15th and 16th century. This is most likely due to a lack of information on other religions such as Jews, thus we assume that the minority held other religions. Besides, from the book, Merchant of Venice, there is background knowledge that Shylock, who is a Jew himself, is biased against most people, thus he is a loner, so it is most likely that the majority of the people held Christianity as their religion.

b.) Why was there such animosity between Jews and Christians?
We are currently unsure of the reasons which caused animosity between Jews and Christians; however, we believe that the reasons are highly connected to the leadership positions. This probably started with the Henrician Reformation; the Act of Supremacy had made Henry VII the head of the Church of England and he introduced a slew of changes such as authorising the English translation of the Bible and English replaced Latin as the language during Church services. Besides, Henry VII also dissolved monastaries (houses reserved for a prayer). Lastly, a woman named Anne Askew was martyred (pretends to be suffering such as to obtain sympathy) but she was arrested and tortured. She could have been a Jew likewise, which caused the deep hatred between the two religions. Followed by Henry VII’s death, Edward VI took over and priests were allowed to marry while pictures/statues of saints were taken down. Lastly, Mary ended the lives of Protestants (those supporting the changes of Henry VII and Edward VI), driving people away from Roman Catholicism.

c.) In what ways did Christians discriminate against Jews in 15th and 16th century Europe?
Jews were discriminated against by the Christians; however, there are not many examples of discrimination acts, one clear example, which we can also see in Merchant of Venice that Jews were charged interests when they had to loan money. However, besides this, there are not many pieces of evidence. As mentioned earlier, the lives of Jews were also taken away by Mary I, in a bid to end the presence of Protestants in England.

Elizabeth I & the Politics of the Elizabethan Era

a.) Elizabeth I: who was she?
Elizabeth I was the Queen of England and Ireland from 17th November 1558 until her death on 24th March 1603.

b.) What were England’s international relations like during Elizabeth’s reign?
England’s international relations were not based on economies, but instead, during that time, it was based on wars and maybe at times trade. An overview of Elizabeth I acts or plans were defensive, trying to protect the interests of England instead of trying to attack other countries, which would result in war. One such example would be the Netherlands Expedition, where they worked hand in hand to defeat the rebels, led by Phillip II. More examples include Elizabeth I trying to defend her very own country, England from the Spanish Armada, led by Phillip II, besides; she had also rendered support to Henry IV of France. Ireland, despite being under her control, also had moments of turbulence, however, she managed to influence the signings of treaties between the two countries, which was in the same case as Russia. One example of successful trades was with the Barbary States, Ottoman Empire and Japan, where trade for military equipment or necessities were undergone between the countries.

c.) What was Shakespeare’s relationship with Elizabeth I?
Elizabeth I had appreciated many of Shakespeare’s plays, thus, she supported the theatres by pumping financial support and most of the time, Shakespeare’s plays were conducted more regularly in court compared to other plays. From this, we could infer that Shakespeare could have been working for the Queen.

d.) Compare Elizabeth I to Portia. How is Portia’s character a tribute to Elizabeth I?
Both of them could be seen as heroines, while Elizabeth I played an important role in maintaining the good international relationships such as preventing wars from continuing, Portia had managed to save Antonio from the court pressing charges against him.

Book Review: A Wrinkle in Time by Madeleine L’Engle

A Wrinkle in Time by Madeleine L’Engle is a science fantasy book which focuses on Meg Murray and her brothers on an adventure to find their missing dad with three weird characters, naming Mrs.Whatsit, Mrs.Who and Mrs.Which.

In “A Wrinkle in Time”, Meg Murray is the protagonist and her family is made up of her mum, her missing day, her two twin brothers, Sandy and Dennys and her youngest brother Charles. One night, one of the three immortal characters, Mrs. Whatsit pays a visit to Meg’s family, claiming that there is a tesseract, which indicates to Meg that there could be a chance to find her missing father. Then, Meg’s classmate, Calvin O’Keefe appears in the story and he mixes into the lives of the Murrays due to him being neglected by his family. Soon afterwards, two more immortal characters, Mrs. Who and Mrs. Which appear, both whom are related to Mrs. Whatsit. The three of them are seen as “immortals” having no physical form, but having the ability to use the tesseract, as mentioned at the start of the novel.

The adventure then starts, with Clavin O’Keefe, Meg and her brother Charles following the three immortal characters. The group travels to two planets, first Uriel, and then Camazotz. At Uriel, it is basically a jumping point (rising action) for the readers to know more about the theme and relates this place to Camazotz, where the climax is seen. Uriel is described as a place where people stay in a state of light and love. After being transported to Camazotz, they are introduced to the enemies that have imprisoned Mr. Murray, called IT, who controls the whole planet. Having met a man with red eyes (name not mentioned), Charles is being hypnotised and tricks the whole group into meeting IT, where their minds were almost taken control of but Mr. Murray, with the use of tesseracts, brings them away to an unnamed planet. However, Charles is left behind.

At the unnamed planet, Aunt Beast, a beast that takes care of Meg, tells her that she possess something that can defeat IT. After going back to Camazotz through the tesseract, Meg realises that love is the power to defeat it. After defeating IT, they are transported back home, however, there is no mention of Dr. Murray.

Since this story is part of a time quintet, it will definitely feature Dr. Murray in one of the stories which include An Acceptable Time, A Wind in the Doors, A Swiftly Tilting Planet and Many Waters.

The major theme is the use of certain elements related to Christianity in the novel. One such example would be “The foolishness of God is wiser than men; and the weakness if God is stronger than men. For ye see your calling, brethren, how many that not wise men after the flesh, not many mighty, not many noble, are called, but God hath chosen the foolish things of the world to confound the wise; and God hath chosen the weak things of the world to confound the things which are mighty. And base things of the world, and things which are despised, hath God chosen, yea, and things which are not, to bring to nought things that are.”

From the above mentioned theme, we move into a minor theme in the story: love. This is only a theme that is mentioned at the end of the story when Meg had love to save her brother, Charles. In Christianity, love is important and the author has linked both together in this novel.

I personally feel that this novel has highlighted one of the important aspects in life, love. Love is a virtue of representing human kindness, compassion and affection, which many of us at a young tender age should understand. Besides, its mention of Christianity in the story allows readers to think much deeper, into their own lives about what they can do for themselves and their loved ones.
A Wrinkle in Time has won many prestigious awards, which includes a Newbery Medal, Sequoyah Book Award and Lewis Carrol Shelf Award, as such; it is a highly recommended book, especially to teenagers and those growing up.

Book Review: Never Let Me Go by Kazuo Ishiguro

Never Let Me Go by Kazuo Ishiguro was first published by Faber & Faber Limited in 2005 is 282-page long novel. The novel, which is science-fiction based, has been so popular that it has been made into a movie last year. A renowned book that one shouldn’t miss, it tracks a love-triangle and cloning of humans. We all know about the cloning of the sheep, Dolly, however, is the cloning of humans practical? Will it happen in the future?

Why is this book so successful? Look at the cover and title carefully and you’ll know why. There’s a blurred image of a girl with her hands stretched out, with a relation to the title. Separation and death is one of the other themes in this book. Never ever let your loved one go, neither do you want him to leave you. However, that is only one of the interpretations. The cover page grabs your attention and conveys a message – What will lie ahead of us but except a fantastic reading experience? A theme that one will experience in his/her life, emotions will be running in your blood during this grandeur experience.

Three major themes – Friendship, Romance, Separation & Death, how has Ishiguro managed to convey these messages through a science-fiction based book? Brilliant and Wonderful are the sole words that can be used to describe his craft and plot. These three themes will revolve around our lives, affecting our lives. Joy, happiness and anxiety are experienced in all three different situations.

The plot revolves around 3 major characters – Kathy, Tommy and Ruth, whom are involved in a love-triangle. The plot is split into 3 major parts – Childhood, Adult and Donor. So, how did Ishiguro managed to fit the three themes into this plot? Let’s explore it together.

In Halimshan, England, the three children grow up together, having a close-knitted relationship and reveal their dreams. As they grow up and become adults, they experience the love-triangle with either Kathy or Ruth backing out during this relationship. There is a teacher at the school, named “Madame Marie-Claude”. During their childhood years, one of the teachers, Miss Lucy reveals to them that they are clones. This news takes a major impact on the children, shattering the dreams but they have to accept their ill fate.

They are expected to make donations towards the end of their adulthood. Both Kathy and Tommy becomes donors, however, Ruth becomes a carer. A series of heart-thumping events occur.

There is a significant scene which also highlights the cover page of the book. When Madame saw Kathy singing, with bursts of life, she reflects on that particular day and says, “…a little girl facing the new world that was emerging, an efficient but cruel world, and asking the old world not to let her go…” How does this represent the story or cover page?

That question is for you to find out, what are the heart-thumping events that occur when they are donors? Think carefully, will this ever happen in the future?

“Ishiguro's imagining of the children's misshapen little world is profoundly thoughtful, and their hesitant progression into knowledge of their plight is an extreme and heartbreaking version of the exodus of all children from the innocence in which the benevolent but fraudulent adult world conspires to place them.”

Book Review: Flowers for Algernon by Daniel Keyes

Flowers for Algernon by Daniel Keyes was first published by Hancourt, Brace & World in 1959 in the Magazine of Fantasy & Science Fiction is a 274-page long novel. The novel, which is science fiction based, is now used by many prestigious schools for the use of analysing the themes. A renowned book that one shouldn’t miss, the novel tracks the lifestyle of a mentally retarded adult named Charlie Gordon. Similar to another novel, “To Kill a Mocking Bird”, the novel has the theme of prejudice embedded in. Many people have said that their lives have taken a twist after reading these novels, will yours change?

Why is this book so successful that it is even explored and analyzed in schools? Simple - the writer’s craft and the theme. Not only written in the 1st Person Point of View, it’s also written in a simple diary format. When I read the book for the 1st time, I was momentarily stunned and that’s what will happen to you when you flip the cover page. First page and it grabs your attention, what else could it be but a fantastic book? Written in this format, allowing readers to get access to his private (since it’s a diary) feelings and opinions.

A simple theme – prejudice and indifference, but Daniel Keyes has managed to bring out these 2 themes through a person’s diary. Wonderful is the only word to describe it. The story revolves around a mentally retarded adult named Charlie Gordon. In today’s society, there are many types of prejudice and one of those would be disabilities and IQ. Other key characters in this story are his teacher, Miss Kinnian, the doctors and a mouse named Algernon.

The plot was not easy to think of, it could have been a simplistic plot in your eyes but in truth, lots of planning had to be done. Charlie Gordon, one with few friends, felt that he had to be clever in order for him to have more friends. Thus, he was introduced to the doctors, who gave him an operation to make him clever, without having any knowledge of the consequences. Reckless at that point of time, the consequences awaited him. At the end, he realised the intelligence was not meant to be permanent and reverted back to the way he was.

So, why is the book named “Flowers for Algernon”? The title is named after the plot in the exciting novel. Prejudice is one of the main concerns in today’s society and the book addresses how one is being looked down by others – the consequences and the changes. A person being mentally retarded gives no excuse for one to bully him/her. An example of prejudice in the novel would be: Charlie’s friends, Joe and Carp, make him act like a clown in front of them, Charlie, oblivious to what’s happening did the act willingly? But, what was it that changed Charlie’s perception? After becoming clever, he witnessed a scene at a restaurant where one waiter was ticked off after breaking a glass cup. He recalled his experiences he had before only to realise – he had been treated the same way before.

What exactly happened between the time he became clever and the time where he reverted back? Would you have expected him to make more friends? True enough, he did not. Instead, the consequences were even direr. There was further gap between his friends and him. People did not look at him the same way as before. People found him different, thus, leaving him further and further. People were unaware of what happened to him. Surprised and shocked, he did not have any friends at all. Thus, should we accept what we were when we are born or should we not resign to fate and make a change for ourselves?

As time passed, Charlie realised his spelling and grammar was getting poorer and poorer. Algernon, with the same operation as well, had already died. Charlie immediately researched and found out that the operation was not meant to last forever. Shocked, surprised, he cried and reflected and regretted in agony. The regression started, slowly by slowly, until he reverted back to his normal self. Towards the end, he attends school once more, having recovered from his agony. In the last sentence of the story, he writes “P.S. Put some flowers on Algernon”. Charlie still remembers him as a friend, the interaction with him (animals and humans), thus, resulting in the title “Flowers for Algernon”.

“Flowers for Algernon” has acclaimed many awards, having won the Hugo Award for Best Short Story in 1960 and joint winner of the Nebula Award for Best Novel in 1966.

Why have people’s lives changed after reading this novel? Revolving around the themes of prejudice and the change in one’s life, it brings out the moral values of what one should have in their own personal lives. To respect one another, to respect people from all walks of life, to respect EVERYONE.

“Anyone who has common sense will remember that the bewilderments of the eye are of two kinds, and arise from two causes, either from coming out of the light or from going into the light, which is true of the mind's eye, quite as much as of the bodily eye.”

Reflections on Expository Essay Test

It has been a turbulent term for me and results are out now. To get C5 for expository is not really good. Some really common errors are the lack of transitional phrases and failed to get my facts and information right. Besides, out the 3 questions given to me, I decided to take question 3, which was about Arts because I was not sure about adolescence and not really sure about social media.

There has not been any improvement from last term’s results; the only thing I hope now is that I will keep that C5 score, meaning that I need to get 7 marks for my feature article.

Writing has never ever been my talent, because I don’t write naturally and have the ability to do so. Besides, maybe I just hate writing English because in Chinese, I do love it and write well. I do not have a passion for English but the trick here could be to develop a passion for English such that my marks will change.

Lack of vocabulary, foundation skills and poor knowledge contribute to the fact why I have done poorly for this test. To do so, this world is not about reading. Throughout this June holidays, I will push myself forward, more reading and most importantly, analyze and learn the skills in the Visual Guide of Grammar. I still have one more term before EOY comes knocking on the door. 18 weeks starting from the June Holidays to EOY, I have got to make sure I get my skills right.

This comment is based on Wei Kiat’s blog post entitled “Sabbatical Term 1 (Hwa Chong Proficiency of Communication”.

I think that overall, you have reflected well and have told us specifically what this sabbatical was all about. Actually, I do not know why they had this name because apparently, in the content, it stated that it was giving speeches and presentations while communication will refer to me as talking with other people. Upon reading the title of this sabbatical, I would have thought that it was going to teach us how to communicate well, the should and should nots and the list goes on. Having such a sabbatical in Hwa Chong will be beneficial to the students, especially since many of us have the fear of going on stage and do a good presentation. This will enhance the presentation skills of students and boost their confidence as well.

This comment is based on Ming Fwu’s blog post entitled “Dewy Decimal System”

First, well done, as I read through most of your blog posts, I realised that all of them have a relation to the book we are studying in our curriculum, “To Kill a Mocking Bird”. It’s really good to see that you take note of small little details like this post, regarding Scout having asked about the teacher’s teaching methods. I mean, many of us in class do not pay attention to these details because we concentrate on the focus of the book, which would be Tom Robinson’s trail but many of us do not take note of them because we think that it is useless. But a small note here would be: there needs to be more room for discussion. Discuss more on why it isn’t used today and why was it used in the past. Elaborate more. But overall, it has been a good blog post. Well Done.

This comment is based on Ban Siang’s blog post entitled “AAT Lessons and School Syllabus”.

To start, I would like to give you a stern warning that you should not be criticising any teacher in our school negatively because your blog is public. I agree with most of your points there, but maybe I would like to bring up something new, which has to do with AAT. So, what is our school’s purpose in implementing these 2 programmes, especially the AAP and AAT? One concentrates on persuasion, while the other concentrates on thinking. To mention, these 2 skills have to do with the recent Singapore General Elections, one must have the skills to do public speaking such as to persuade residents to vote for them while one must think well such as to make sure that they can improve the lifestyles of the people. So, now we know why, it is to work hard towards our aim, to groom pupils into future people on the political stage.

This comment is based on Tian-Le’s blog post entitled “Book Review”.

As a librarian, I do write book reviews for the Library blog and every time I write, I always refer to a “so-called” template which tells me what the content should be like. Firstly, very importantly, you have to state miscellaneous information regarding the book in the 1st paragraph. Follow that up with a summary of the book. Then, very importantly, you should highlight the main themes of the book and discuss it briefly. I like your content, especially when you compared the book to “To Kill a Mockingbird” which shows comparison of similarities. More content that you may want to add is about the author and lastly, every book review should end with a quote or an encouraging sentence to persuade readers to grab the book. If you are promoting the book, do note that you should not reveal the ending of the book.

This comment is based on Cheng Tat’s blog post entitled “Leaving Kids Alone at Home”.

The content in this post is very limited and does not answer the question. What is the purpose of a blog post? It is to give your own opinions about a certain topic of interest, then allow other people to comment, thus both sides are able to gain knowledge. I think that in this blog post, you should have addressed your own opinions such as to give a broader view of the topic and not only give background knowledge of the topic. What do I feel? Well, they should be punished by the law, but the severity depends on the conditions such as them having a stressed life and so on. This will function like the Tribunal for the Parents Maintenance Act.

This comment is based on Ivan Ong’s blog post entitled “Hard News Story”.

This article has been written generally well but there are some minor flaws. Firstly, I think part of the content is irrelevant to the topic such as the last few paragraphs, which mentioned why Tom Robinson was in jail. There is no need for you to state it, even if you want to state it, wrap it up in 2 short sentences. Besides, more content should have been added such as to improve the article. When something happens, we always look for reactions, so maybe you may want to touch on the reactions of Calpurina and Atticus, followed by the actions they had taken. Lastly, the ending was a little abrupt; you could have wished the best for Helen, Tom Robinson’s wife or look to the future or put a general statement on how you feel that this incident will affect Maycomb.

This comment is based on Zhi Hao’s blog post entitled “LKY’s Comments T2P9”.

I feel that all the points that you have stated are definitely valid. But I mean, look at reality now, obviously the PAP has to do so. What were you expecting? A PAP candidate goes up to the stage and starts rallying by saying that the opposition party is better than them, thus, the residents should vote for the opposition party. This will never happen. Mr. Lee Kuan Yew is representing PAP and has to put in a good word for them, such as to sway the mindset of the voters. Most importantly, his comments are not backed by evidence. He claimed that the voters have to accept the consequences, but the Worker’s Party, who has indeed won Aljunied GRC has said that they will fulfil their promises and I look forward to the development in Aljunied for the next 5 years.

This comment is based on Liak Ghee’s blog post entitled “Are girls the stronger sex?”

Firstly, the content is very limited and should have been expanded more to a wider range of aspects. These aspects include the politics; take for example, Singapore, during the General Elections 2011, were there female candidates that won? Yes, but however, compare that number to the number of male candidates won. Besides, as compared in your post, the personalities of the 2 different genders. Females also intend to be more emotional and sympathetic compared to men. My opinion with regards to this topic is that this topic should not be in place. We may be different genders, but when comparing, you have to base it on a certain aspect, not in general because the 2 genders have different personalities, needs and purposes.

Feature Article

The Maycomb Tribune
Ewell Dead during Attempted Attack

Head of Ewell Family, Bob Ewell was dead during a planned attack on the honourable lawyer, Atticus Finch’s children.
Alabama, Maycomb. Reported by Kervin Tay

Bob Ewell was found dead during his planned attack on Atticus Finch’s children, Scout and Jem. Both of them were believed to be on their way back from school during the night when Ewell attacked them from behind.

One of the victims, Scout, gave the recount, “I don’t know what happened… we were struggling…I’m lucky to be alive because the knife had pierced the costume was in only.”

“Ewell had attacked us from behind, with a knife. In the dark, we could not see anything and we struggled when he attacked, I suffered some cuts but we’re really lucky to be alive. During this attack, we heard footsteps and were saved.” said anxiously by Jem, the older of the two children.

According to Mr. Heck Tate, the police commissioner of Maycomb said that Boo Radley was the saviour, by pinning him down. Police are also continuing investigations of the death of Ewell.

“There are currently two possibilities, one – Boo had killed him for the safety of the children, two – he had killed himself in the struggle, when the knife was on the ground and he fell on it.”

Ewell’s motive of the attack is currently unknown but police suspect that it was because of revenge during Tom Robinson’s controversional court case. Besides, there were recounts of Ewell threatening Atticus before.

“I would like to express my gratitude to Boo Radley for helping and saving my children. Thank you so much. Besides, I am just glad that this has finally ended,” Atticus, the father of the attacked children said.

Police are appealing for witnesses to come forward or contact Mr. Heck Tate.

This comment is based on Jonathan Ng’s blog post entitled “Maycomb Tribune – Tom Robinson’s failed escape attempt”.

I feel that it is written pretty well but there is definitely room for improvement. One such point would be that you should add in photos to describe what happened or not the picture of the late Tom Robinson. Besides, you should have described the tones of the two men, Atticus and Mr. Ewell when interviewed. I would also like to suggest another new headline for this article, like “Negro shot dead in attempted escape”. It would be much more specific and shorter. Lastly, there could be more specific evidence such as the time of the incident, instead of just stating yesterday, you could say yesterday morning.

This comment is based on Wei Kiat’s blog post entitled “Facebook: A Waste of Time?”

I feel that the points you have brought up in your post are all valid but I would like to give my own opinion on this issue. Facebook is a social networking site, and some benefits do include an easy platform for communication and for leisure. However, Facebook is classified under cyber space, anything can happen in cyber space. Scams, for example would be one, the friends you make online, do you know who he/she truly is? Maybe on Facebook, the user is a female but who knows, behind the scenes, the user is actually a male, trying to con you of your money. Cyber space or modern technology is an important tool today in our modern society. It is mostly used for propaganda, take for example in Singapore, where it is now mostly used for the General Elections 2011 such as to gather support and interest from the public

HCNY Book Club

I attended the HCI - NYGH activities, also named as HCNY Book Club co-organized by the 2 schools, held at NYGH library on 4th March 2011. The main purposes of the activities was to cultivate interests in science fiction books, in which the end product was to come up with a powerpoint presentation on the chosen book to present to the rest of the participants after 6 weeks of work with the other students. Groups were formed with 2 from HCI and another 2 from NYGH. Besides the following aims, we aimed to foster good relationships with NYGH and hope to collaborate more in the future more activities. The 3-hour session was meaningful and thrilling, starting off with some icebreakers such as playing Wacko. Next, we proceeded to the library in our respective groups to search for our book, in which my group decided on “Never Let Me Go” by Kazuo Ishiguro.

Throughout the six weeks, all 7 groups have been working hard such as to show their best presentations for our second gathering, held at HCI on 29th April 2011. The various groups presented, with the content consisting of the summary, author, reflections and depictions of the technology. Throughout the event, besides the academic skills and learning points, we have learnt some moral values. Most importantly, to be a Hwa Chong gentleman since we were the hosts. During last year’s event, we had failed to behave like what a HwaChongnian should be like; however, there were contrasting attitudes. Although we have done well, there would always be room for improvement, such as to allow the event to be a resounding success.

In conclusion, it was a worthwhile experience in which we learnt more about the schools' curriculum and also know more about their library and how they function. By analyzing books, we are able to encourage better and deeper critical thinking which applies to AAT in HCI. The event was a success, bringing students from both schools together. In the hope of the future, the organizers are hoping to include another school, down Bukit Timah Road or up Dunearn Road to join this event and hope for resounding success the next time.

Reflections - CIP@Jurong East (April)

Book: Animal Farm by George Orwell

1.) Do you think this event has allowed you to improve your own skills (e.g. Public Speaking)?

I feel that it has allowed us most importantly on how to interact with the public, especially since when this presentation was made to be an interactive one. There was active participation from the audience. Some of our skills is to do public speaking and have enough general knowledge to take part in the discussions, thus as we discuss, we do realise that we have to improve more such as to make the event a much more successful one.

2.) Do you think this event has proved to be a challenge for you in terms of laying out your skills in front of the public?

There is always pressure on us to perform well especially since our school’s name has been announced to the public because we need to uphold our school’s name and pride and this week, there were students from both HCI and MGS amongst the audience. When in public, there is always a certain degree of one being nervous, since we are strangers.

3.) Do you think that this event given you a different understanding of the public/yourself (role in community)?

This particular event has given me a new role in this society, which is to introduce new books to the public by persuading them to read that particular book. Besides, by discussing the themes of the book, we do have some topics with relation to current affairs to talk about. Thus, we are able to know what the audience feels about the particular topic. For example, the session this week was concentrated on the General Elections and the debate on if Singapore is indeed a democratic country, as we have said so in our Singapore Pledge.

4.) What were your feelings throughout the event?

I personally felt that the event was quite a success and my partner, Chun Shin tried his best to make this a much livelier one, such as saying that unicorn is an animal during the ice-breakers and during our discussion, all of us had to agree that Singapore is indeed a democratic country or not the police will catch us. Besides, there was an improvement from the previous event, because I think we were given a “private space” and we could talk with freedom.

5.) What have you learnt from others, especially those you are working with?

I think that the most important point is to be flexible on the day of the event itself especially when we meet problems. An example for this week’s event would be that we had actually quite a few parts of the presentation where we crafted wrongly and did not flow as smoothly as expected. Besides, one has to make sure that the audience enjoy themselves throughout the whole event by cracking jokes, as what Chun Shin has done. Besides, our plans were almost abandoned due to the absence of a group member but we had sought help from the librarian in charge.

6.) What improvements could be made in the future (General P.O.V)?

I feel that we need to take note of time management. During the whole event, we failed to keep into the given time. We started the presentation around 3.10 p.m. and had failed to complete about a quarter of the presentation. Thus, as suggested, we would leave at least 30 minutes of buffer time but plan something beforehand in case there is excess time. Besides, I would have felt that a better ice-breaker should have been made because this time round, although the audience enjoyed it, I think that we should make an ice-breaker with relations to the theme. Lastly, there needs to be team spirit, one of our group members was late which almost led to us abandoning part of the agenda, there needs to be better communication in the future.

7.) Are we choosing the right books appealing to the suited audience? Is there a problem? Are we able to address this problem?

For this weekend’s event, I felt that the book we had chosen appealed to the audience since it had the themes of communism, corruption and democracy which we were able to discuss with them as they were mostly from secondary schools. A major problem would be the lack of people attending the event. I think to address this problem, it could be due to the length of the session, and perhaps shortening it to 1 hour would be better. Besides, we have not covered the differing interests of the audience. I suggest in the future that we could do some on Chinese books, or discuss about a relevant topic such as “Weblogs” and maybe moral-related movies, which are available in the library, such as “Remembering the Titans”.

Term 1 Sabbatical: Solar Panels / Renewable Energy

I attended a workshop on renewable energy which concentrated on the use of solar panels in today's world. On a general basis, the whole week was thrilling since there was a practical or hands-on for us every day. Every day we started off with some presentations of bits of information regarding solar panels. This sabbatical was initiated to encourage HwaChongnians to be more environmentally-friendly since solar panels had already been installed in school at Block A. The idea of solar panels came to light when a group of students decided to embark on a solar panel project, thus resulting in the solar panels having been installed in our school.

Day 1 was about the brief history on solar panels and the calculations of electricity, followed by a practical on calculation of electricity produced in a classroom. Day 2 concentrated on the positioning of solar panels, followed by a practical for proposal in any part of the school. Day 3 concentrated on the types of solar panels and we tried different panels under the sun, tracking results with a micrometer. Day 4 moved on to a report on how to start off a solar panel project while Day 5 was a FULL-Practical day, making a small solar panel from scratch.

So, what was the reason behind for setting up this particular course? I believe that it was to instill a mindset into us, to be environmentally-friendly and save Mother Earth, especially when global warming is at a serious stage due to us, humans using her resources daily and the emission of carbon dioxide during the burning of natural resources to produce electricity contributes to global warming. Thus, this sabbatical wanted to tell us to change methods to get electricity, instead of burning natural resources, we could depend on the sunlight to convert it into electricity for our use, thus this will result in lesser carbon dioxide produced, thus it will not have such a big impact on global warming. Thus, after attending this course, I feel that I have a greater understanding of solar panels and its purpose, its costs and how it works such as to produce electricity. At the end of the day, there is a lingering question, “Will we opt for solar panels instead burning natural resources and when will this ever happen (until we are forced to)?”

iCIT Training Camp

The iCIT Training Camp was held on Wednesday to Thursday during the one-week long March Holidays. The aim of the event was to kick start the journey of the CITs and also serve as a training platform for the new, budding leaders.

Now, I have to ask myself: Why did I decide to join iCouncil? Was it because a teacher had invited me to do so? During Secondary One, I was pretty much interested to join council but what hindered me from doing so? Yes, there will always be influence from my parents but I had to give up this opportunity for myself. After all, many people feel that academics come before council. I failed to score well in PSLE already and I knew that I had to buck up and keep up with the learning pace in Hwa Chong, especially since it is my first year in secondary school – I needed time to get use to the system and cope with it. After one year, the same conditions again – bad results, and yet again, I was not “encouraged” to become a councillor, but what really sparked me was an invitation from the teacher. Why did I accept it then? First and foremost, it was to not let the teacher down, especially since he believed I had the abilities to become a councillor. Next, this was my last chance to lead this school, my only chance to get the experience of being a councillor and gain leadership experience. It was a rare chance, and I had to take it.

Day 1 started off with a briefing and icebreakers followed by the Amazing Race, which fostered better relationships between members, this was followed by time to practice for Performance Night and then we watched a movie "Remembering the Titans". However, throughout the night at 2.30 a.m., we were woken up for a night activity "Kidnap", many of us were surprised and the aim of this was to access the reaction time of the CITs and to see how alert can they be at any time. Day 2 started with breakfast at McDonald's while the rest of the day was dedicated to practice for Performance Night with a dining etiquette at SIM, teaching us how to dine in the proper and usual conditions. The day rounded off with the Sec 4 Farewell Party and Performance Night.

What have I learnt throughout this whole camp? I have aims in this journey as a councillor – to lead my class, my consortium and my school. This experience is not only about fun, but behind the scenes, hard work has to be put in to make sure every event is a success. My aims for this year – to be a great councillor, do well academically and also to excel in my CCA.

CCA Library: What it Truly Means

Library is a CCA not appreciated by many students in the school, deeming it as a CCA just to waste time and fulfill one's CCA commitments. But indeed, there is more than that the student population do not know. Firstly, why is there even CCA Library in the first place? This just tells us that the school administrative feels that we are important to the school; we make a contribution to the school. Library is not a competitive CCA, it is not a CCA where we bring glory to the school and we bring back trophies, it is not about that. Library is a CCA in which we are committed too; it is a Service Learning CCA, where we contribute to the school population for their needs and the welfare.

I have been in this CCA for more than one year. During the Secondary One Orientation, I opted not to pay any attention to my seniors’ introducing this particular CCA but now, I apparently reflect on my actions then. Surprisingly, towards a CCA that I showed no interest in during the Orientation, I have developed a passion for my CCA. So, what made me join this CCA? Yes, of course there is influence from my parents, it is a CCA that I saw as “lackluster” and there was no need to devote so much time to it. Thus, I would be able to concentrate on my studies and excel academically. Yes, that was my thinking in the past but that mindset has changed.

As a Secondary One, I would do what is expected of me and excel well in CCA. If I was ever going to be a librarian, I told myself: Be the Best One. That’s it but now what I really experience is the hard work. The job of a librarian is not going about shelving, wrapping, cataloguing books but it is more than that. Together, we experience fun moments such as our annual Library Camp during the June Holidays. Now, I have grown and become a much more mature gentleman, knowing what this CCA is all about. As each year passes, this CCA is much more involved in the school’s activities and recently, we were the organizers of Library Week and World Book Day. However, it would not have been successful if not for the guidance of our teachers. Lastly, we will bring glory to the school soon. We have participated in writing based competitions such as the Global Book Report Competition.#

To me: I only have a message for myself. I was that ignorant Secondary One boy that wasn’t paying attention to my senior. Now, it is my turn to promote this CCA and library to parents during the Open House. I know what this CCA truly means and I will try my very best to convey the spirit of us, librarians.

Expository Essay - Comment 5

The comments are based on Ong Yan Zhe’s blog post:
Which aspects of your education do you think will be most useful to you in adult life?

One, I think that the quote you put has no relation to what this topic is about. Education can be used everywhere, it usually means the different aspects of life. In your introduction, you should have defined the key word here “adult life”. What does it mean to you and what are the aspects of it? Thus, in all your 3 body paragraphs, if you mention it is the academic aspect, then you should be referring to the job prospect in your adult life. You should clearly state the aspect of education and aspect of adult life in every body paragraph. A main pointer would be: Where is your thesis? After reading the first paragraph, it is either there is no thesis or the thesis was phrased badly because if the last sentence is your thesis, there is no relation to this topic at all.

Expository Essay - Comment 4

The comments are based on Ivan Ong’s blog post:
Should entertainers and sport stars be paid such large sums of money? What are your views?

I feel that in general, it is a pretty good exposition. Your introduction is well written by giving a huge figure and fact that hooks people but I would suggest you to change the last sentence because it is just copying the question. You could have changed it to “Do they deserve this kind of life?” I felt that there were overlapping points in paragraphs 1 and 2 because high demand means the audience wants to see them. However, your second point is not totally wrong, however, you should have changed the point to “Money needed for Behind-the-Scenes Job”. Lastly, your ending also seems like a point, do try to change it to a proper summary which reaffirms your thesis.

Expository Essay - Comment 3

The comments are based on Nicholas Teo’s blog post:
Our lives have improved as a result of computers. Do you agree?

To start, you have a very good introduction. You start off with a quote from a famous person but after that, you should not have just rephrased or copy the demands of the question. Change the content into simpler words and define the keyword such as “improved”. However, most importantly, there is a huge weakness in your essay. Out of your 3 body paragraphs, 2 of them have been focused on education, which is not expected of this question. The question is asking for the demands of the society and community, not only appealing to teachers and students but rather the general audience.

Expository Essay - Comment 2

The comments are based on Lee Liak Ghee’s blog post:
How much of your progress in school is the result of your own ability, good luck, or good teaching?

Upon seeing this topic, if I were the one writing, I would have concentrated on one of them. For example, if I concentrate on “good luck”, I would probably have about 3 paragraphs while the other 2 points would have a paragraph each unlike your essay which is evenly spread out into 3 different aspects. I feel that the introduction could be further improved as it is a case of copying and paste with a little rephrasing. Try to define the key words in the first paragraph such as ability, luck and progress. Another point is that “CCAs” should not have been used as an abbreviation because the reader may not know what it stands for.

Expository Essay - Comment 1

The comments are based on Loh Wei Kiat’s blog post:
What do you consider to be the most important social problem in the world today?

I feel that the essay is very informal and may not be applicable for examinations or tests. The essay is very much “question-based”, he keeps asking questions in the essay. The main purpose of an expository essay is not to ask the readers questions and evoke the feelings and opinions of them. Instead, it is to inform and persuade them on your point of view by giving them information and evidence. I feel that the content could have been further improved. For example, you mentioned prejudice, instead of comparing how it is related to greed, you should have given me reasons why it is the most important social problem today.

Expository Essay

How far do you agree that weblogs are more beneficial than harmful to individuals and society?

Type of Essay: Cause –and- Effect Relationships & Argumentative

Annotations/Definitions

1.) Weblogs: A Shared on-line journal where people can post diary entries about their personal experiences and hobbies.
2.) Beneficial: Conferring Benefit; Advantageous; Helpful
3.) Harmful: Causing or Capable of Causing Harm; Injurious
4.) Individuals: A single Human Being, as Distinguished from a Group
5.) Society: An organized group of persons associated together for religious, benevolent, cultural, scientific, political, patriotic or purposes

In today’s modern society, with the evolution of Internet, weblogs revolve around us. On April 19th, Channel News Asia (CNA) reported an insurance scam, involving a 45-year-old former freelance insurance claims advisor Hamzah Karim. He told his accomplices to lie, and make “fake” recounts, which he would get money for every case reported. This is one of the harms users of weblogs will face. From food blogs to business blogs, there is a wide range of weblogs today. However, we are unaware of what is “behind the scenes” that could be injurious or advantageous. Different weblogs serve different purposes and we gain new knowledge from every blog.

First, weblogs update people based on one’s interest. Interests differ from person to person, such as current affairs and one’s life. Once a weblog is set up, people having the same interest with you will read your weblog. Most importantly, it is to update people on information, such as your lifestyle or the specific interest chosen. Besides, weblogs can be used as a platform to discuss the specific interest as people with different opinions will provide valuable pointers which could be of use to you. Thus, both sides benefit, gaining new knowledge.

Next, weblogs are used as a platform to earn money. Besides working in the day, one can earn bonuses of money. Whenever, wherever one is, as long as there is Internet, one can control the weblog and put on more items for sale. It’s a convenient way of business, and the most basic platform for a young budding businessman, people in the society planning to be an entrepreneur. Although it may be a small business, if promoted well, one could rake in a steady sum of money from weblogs.

However, weblogs have been used as a platform for fraud. Although weblogs are deemed as “business opportunities”, it could be detrimental to users. Online transactions take place in business-based blogs and carried out through means such as Paypal and credit cards. We are unaware of what’s happening behind the scenes and who knows one could be cheated of money? The money was sent to the blogger, but the item never reached them and this, is a common situation in today’s world of greed and evil.
Lastly, weblogs are too dangerous a platform to reveal one’s emotions. Emotions of people overwhelm their actions; these emotions take control of their minds, resulting in their words being a symbol of their feelings. Once your emotions are made known to this public blog, it could hurt the feelings of others and result in one getting in hot soup. These incidents could have to do with prejudice and political issues.

Ultimately, weblogs are both a beneficial and harmful platform. Participation in weblogs will allow one to constantly gain new knowledge and for us to reflect and reveal our emotions and actions. These values will go a long way, keeping us in check of our emotions and build one’s moral values in the many more years to follow.

A Day in the Life of Pre-War

What is happening to this world? What is going to happen in the future? These are the two questions that I constantly ask myself today. A male student in Singapore, living in fear every day, this is the situation I am experiencing today. I ask myself, “Why, why do I need to face or even accept reality?” Every day, all of us are so tense; we sat at the edge of our seats, as we experienced fear and anxiety. Almost every now and then, there were drills for the whole school, in order to prepare us. Every day, we have a different piece of news entering my ears, first China, then Thailand agreed a treaty, then the Philippines and now, they were at Malaysia. Am I going to lose my life? I worry every moment, every large sound heard made the hair on my arms stand and sent a chill down my spine. I was prepared to face this reality, it can happen anytime, anywhere. Should I accept my fate or should I continue to fight on for justice in the future (if they ever come)? There is pressure and fear in every one. In the past, our hearts beat as one, our life was peaceful and we lived a gracious life but now, what is the situation? As each day passes, our hearts have never beaten as one again, our hearts beat faster (but the reason), the fear in us grows continuously throughout the day. Whether is the morning or night, whenever outside, we looked up into the sky, making sure there were no Japanese planes before making our way out for outdoor activities. Why must we have this kind of life? Why is there war in the world? I do not understand why. Why can’t we have peace and build a harmonious Mother Earth and prevent destruction. They are coming, those in green uniform, yes they are but the question is: Are we ready for this war? Our masters, the British have said that Singapore will be safe but the two important ships have been sunk off Kuantan and they have been beaten in Philippines and Malaysia, will we be the next to fall? I must continue – to fight on for survival when they come. Yes, I am only but a 14 year old boy but what we need is courage. As I have learnt in the Book “To Kill a Mocking Bird”, courage is not a man that has a gun, instead courage is when one has licked before he begins but you begin anyway and you see it through no matter what. You rarely win but sometimes you do. I must have this courage, to fight on for not only myself, my family, my community, my society but my country and my world. I do it because I want to make this country, this world a better one. When disaster comes, it brings out the best in men and I hope that this war will bring out the best, the courage in men.

Picture Description

Picture: 3 min 28 s

The Nikon camera closed up in a view, beyond the layer of glass panels. Two strands of rope connected to both ends of the historic antique were dangling; “clink, and clink” rang in one’s ears. A layer of grey dust covered the top of the antique. As one looked back, the image became more blur. Smell of the elderly, the hospital was whiffed, the surface was rough due to the dust but, in reality, the leather-made camera was smooth. Looking from the top, the design was unique, a pyramid stood above all, but in fact, it was not a pyramid. Made up of awkward shapes below, the letters “Nikon” were imprinted clearly with two metal pins on each side. A round glass panel, overturned, was the middle and most important frame. There stood the antique camera, all alone, by itself on the exhibition.

Singapore Arts Festival @ Juorng East Library

I attended a talk organized by Singapore Arts Festival on the video "Old Places", in which one of the co-directors, Vitric Thng, was with us for a panel discussion on the video. The first video shown to us was actually a dance film, to portray one being trapped in an enclosed cage and by the moves of the dancer; one was able to infer her feelings - lonely, sad and slow. Vitric then commented on the dance film, saying it is rare in Singapore and dance films are special due to the film being able to bring across a message to the audience through dance steps. However, he gave his opinions on Hollywood films, in which he said that it was "crap" because when we walk out of the cinema, do we ever learn anything from it? The movie is just to give you entertainment for those 2 hours and earn your money. In his opinion, a powerful and good film is one where you think about it for a few days after watching it.

"Old Places" was a meaningful film which took down some of the old places in Singapore to showcase to the young generation and future generation about its rich history and culture, especially since many of these buildings would have to make way for new ones in the coming future. Not only does it capture the history, but also invite people that have been there before to express their views and recall the past experiences they had there. A meaningful film, all Singaporean children and the future batch must watch it. But the question that leaves me pondering is: Why, why do these buildings have to be demolished? Can’t they be kept as a “historical monument”? Yes, sometimes, old buildings have to make way for new buildings, such that Singapore can keep up with the pace of other countries such as Japan, especially since Singapore has a limited land area. But in the video, there are still some places such as Toa Payoh Market which has since been demolished. Many residents in the area wanted it to be kept, because the atmosphere is in the air, the interaction between the stall owners and the customers; one feels that going to the market is a form of happiness. Another example would be the playgrounds in the past, where there was sand. Today, can you find it? Children enjoyed this type of playgrounds because they could build sandcastles and it was just a stone’s throw away, instead of having to go to the beach.

9.0 - Voices From the Ground

Japan met with a disaster earthquake on 11th March. Ever since then, it has been a moment of recovery for them, to rebuild the country they once had. It has been more than one month ever since the earthquake struck Fukushima, Japan and the people in Japan are experiencing aftershocks frequently. The earthquake, the first for many people, will leave a scar on their memory and it has been a traumatic experience for many people.

As part of iCouncil, 10 of us volunteered on a Saturday evening to host the event "9.0 - Voices From the Ground" which was a fundraising event for the Japan earthquake and we were to work as ushers on that day itself. This was an awe-inspiring performance, furthermore, the organizer, Issac, was one of our old boys and the chairman of iCouncil 2002, which made the event even more special for the 10 of us. Issac has been living inTokyo, Japan’s capital and ever since the earthquake struck Fukushima, he has been planning for a fund-raising event to do his part for Japan and contribute to the relief efforts.

The performance, made up of 3 presentations and 4 bands, entertained the crowd and drove some to tears during the presentation, including the presenters and the audience. The presentations mainly focused on the events happened in Japan and the actions taken and what had happened to their own lives and all 4 presenters were from Japan, all living near Fukushima. One presenter that left a deep impression on me was the 2nd presenter, he was a teacher in Fukushima and after the earthquake, he had to sought help from the Japan embassy such as to get back here, being a Singaporean. During the presentation, he mentioned that he is worried about the status of his students over in Fukushima and he wishes to go back to help but is unable to do so once he thinks of his family and his life. Besides, he also mentioned the spirit of the Japanese, the principal of the school had actually offered him water (since there was water in the school) when people instead were queuing up for water for 4 hours. This spirit is the spirit when man exhibit in times of bad. When a disaster happens, most of us would be fighting for survival, but in Japan, they are giving miracles for the survival of others.

The bands offered some entertainment, shockingly; some of them were only formed weeks ago when approached by the organizers to perform. From Sunshine to S.E., some songs provided hope for Japan while others were to cheer them on and lift the spirits of many. I enjoyed it very much and I am glad that I have played a part to help Japan overcome this crisis as they hope to rebuild what it was used to be.

Analysis of a Broadsheet and Tabloid

What is the difference between broadsheets and tabloid newspapers? Does one always deal with more respectable news / produce more professional journalism than the other? Are there in-between types of newspapers?

The 1st question has already been gone through in class, but as a conclusion, these are the areas that we look at when comparing them: Layout, Language, Tone, Message, and Target Audience. Under these 5 categories, all of them have their own standout points, thus, they are 2 very different types of newspapers. In reality, one always deal with more respectable news and also produce more professional journalism than the other and that would be the broadsheet. Take Singapore’s 2 newspapers as an example: “The Straits Times” and “The New Paper”. Although the broadsheet, as discussed in class, is used for propaganda by the government, it still relays information to the general public, such as current affairs (World and Asia News), thus these are news that globally everyone should know (Global Perspective), thus, it would be classified as respectable news. Besides, they also do concentrate locally, such as the General Election, which should be seen as respectable since it involves us, the citizens and the government. Tabloid newspapers are generally informal and concentrate more on entertainment (Sports) than important news/headlines; they usually reveal opinions of some victims or a particular theme.

There is an in-between newspaper and I would mention it as “Reader’s Digest”. Reader’s Digest can be formal and very informal. It contains information which does appeal to current affairs at times, with the latest issue concentrating on the marriage in England. Other components include the Olympics last year and the appointment of Barack Obama as the President of USA. However, it can be informal like directors in Asia – their opinions and most of the time, they have this “Special Story” part which can be linked to current affairs, however, it is not directly related, thus, it seems more of a reading pleasure for those reading Reader’s Digest.

A Comparison of Newsworthiness: Book & Article

Write about what you have learnt about newsworthiness. Are the factors that make a story newsworthy the same factors that would arouse your interest in a story?

There are a total of 12 factors that affect the newsworthiness of an article:

1.) Timeliness
2.) Proximity
3.) Exceptional Quality
4.) Possible Future Impact
5.) Prominence
6.) Conflict
7.) Number of People Involved/Affected
8.) Consequence
9.) Human Interest
10.) Pathos
11.) Shock Value
12.) Titillation Component

I feel that not all factors that make a newspaper article newsworthy the same factors that would arouse one’s interest in as story. However, there are maybe only 4 factors involved: Possible Future Impact, Conflict, Consequence and Human Interest. Firstly, a possible future impact would most probably be a book having the theme of science fiction. In science fiction books, we think and explore some of the events or technology that would happen in the future, one example would be cloning, from the book “Never Let Me Go” by Kazuo Ishiguro. The changes in technology would have an impact on our lives, because this technology will gradually be part of us in our lives. Next, conflict and consequence go together in a story. In a story, most likely fiction, something it must have to attract readers would be a conflict. A good or bad conflict determines the success of the book, a good one will arouse the interest of the readers and they will continue reading the book to find out the end, in which consequence are involved. Consequences can be good or bad, but are usually bad, it is a pretty biased part in a story, based on one’s thinking, but it has to be there to put an end to the story. Lastly, human interest would refer to the themes of a book. This is especially for readers who have a certain preference for the type of books that they read. For example, some themes are romance, mystery, adventure and the list goes on.

Words Go Round Panel Discussion (Part 3)

Question: In your opinion, how do writers make “words come alive”? Based on what you have heard during the panel discussion, how would you make “words come alive” for you and your friends?

In my own opinion, writers make “words come alive” by writing something that is true, that means he gets inspiration from something he sees or rather current affairs then he makes a story out of the thing/topic he has chosen. Thus, he makes the story seem real as all the descriptions in the story are actually real but then it is just that the story has been fabricated but planned so detailed such that the readers keep thinking in their mind that it is real. I personally feel that this way of writing is very, very tough, take for example that you are writing science fiction, it makes it very tough to write stories through this method as this talks about the present circumstances while science fiction concentrates on the future. This method is indeed effective to allow readers to be engrossed in your story and start to think if the story has been fabricated or not. Thus, when writing, try to find a common topic between your friends and yourself, and then try to make up a story in which the theme is the topic chosen and involve your friends in it. Through this particular method, we are able to make “words come alive”.

Words Go Round Panel Discussion (Part 2)

Question: Elaborate on 2 insights about poetry and Singaporean literature you have gleaned from the panel discussion.

Poetry was not thoroughly discussed throughout the panel discussion, thus I would express my own opinions on it. During the panel discussion, one asked the writers their opinions on the issue that some schools are concentrating more on literature outside of Singapore instead of Singaporean literature, thus he wanted to know the view of the 3 writers if Singaporeans would lose the Singaporean identity if that was to happen. All 3 of them shared the same view that there should be equal importance in both types of literature because Singaporean literature concentrates on Singapore, giving students the Singaporean identity as this particular type of literature concentrates on the current affairs/language/culture in Singapore, however, general literature should not be overlooked as this type of literature could be more in-depth, holding more meaning thus allowing students to have a better understanding of literature. By studying both types of literature, the students would be able to have the Singaporean identity and also how to interpret literature. Poetry, if discussed, would have touched on the differences of Singaporean poetry and general poetry. It is pretty similar to the reasons behind literature, however, general poetry could play a part since it poetry can be written by inspiration of anything. Singaporean poetry tends to look at the culture while general poetry concentrates on a message to be delivered to the audience about a particular issue / thing. Next, I would concentrate on a general question applying to both aspects, what do both types of writing appeal to you, what do they represent/symbolise? This question was mentioned during the panel discussion and the writers replied that these represent life because they are writers, and all form of writings revolves around them. However, what does it mean to a student like me? It represents an interest, a hobby in which we explore and learn as we read through the articles one by one.

Words Go Round Panel Discussion (Part 1)

Question: Which speaker did you find the most engaging, informative or enjoyable? Why?

I felt that Jeffery Lim was the most engaging, informative and enjoyable amongst the three. When he started off talking, he did not start like what the other two people did, they actually just jumped into the topic of TellTales but Jeffery actually started off with a self-introduction, giving his opinions on some issues before introducing his story. When introducing his story, he engages us in a very enjoyable way by telling us about Current Affairs, how he was inspired to write these stories is actually of some real events happening in Singapore. When asked on their opinions of what literature means to them, he says the answer definitely and confidently, stating that literature to him is life and I think he knows a lot of current issues happening, having a broader knowledge especially since many people were asking them questions based on the current situations in Singapore. Besides, he speaks in a much friendlier way, making me feel closer to him and more willing to interact with him.
